Rahi
A support center for women survivors
Recovering and healing from incest

Rahi is a support center for women surviving incest and is dedicated to providing a variety of services in this area. These services are specifically directed toward urban middle class women.

It believes that incest, or childhood sexual abuse within the family, is a profound violation not only of the child's body, but that of the trust implicit in a care-giving relationship. This violation has an equally profound impact on how the adult sees and experiences the world.

It also believes that the effects of incest can be devastating, but they do not have to be permanent. The organization is committed to making women aware of the nature of incest, and its consequences in each individual woman's life. Its objective is to help women who have been abused, experience a healing process so that they regain control of their lives and realize their true potential.

The organization makes it possible for women to grow from victim to survivor, and finally to contributor.

Services

Information: Rahi makes available information on incest and related issues. There are brochures, books, articles, newsletters, journals, audio and video cassettes for survivors and for all those interested in the subject. Part of this reference library contains material specifically for mental health professionals on concerns related to treatment with survivors.

Individual Support: Talking about incest is often difficult. Breaking the silence however, can be a powerful healing force. Rahi provides a safe and confidential space for a survivor to come and share her experiences and feelings with a knowledgeable and concerned individual.

Group Support: Group processes can be of different kinds to meet different objectives. For new survivors, Rahi organizes Psycho-Education groups. These are based on information, discussion and experiential exercises. For those survivors who are ready to share their personal experiences in a group with other survivors, it has set up support groups. Both these processes are empowering and therapeutic.

Referrals: Rahi has an established network of mental health professionals that includes psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists and counselors. It helps survivors get in touch with the appropriate person as and when required.

Workshops: Rahi conducts and organizes workshops on incest and sexual abuse. These are designed to meet the needs of the participants, who can be survivors, students, or other groups of interested women.

Research and Documentation: Rahi documents life stories of survivors and the experiences of mental health professionals working in this field. This documentation is in the form of publication and is available to those who are interested.
