An NGO's Profile
Akshara disseminates information on and raises consciousness and sensitivity towards women's issues, supports women's studies, women's movement and other people's movements. It is currently conducting gender-sensitization programs like workshops, wall poster project, study-groups, and seminars. It conducts refresher programs for Mumbai and SNDT University lecturers. It plays a supportive role in campaigns on sexual abuse, domestic violence etc. It brings out publications on contemporary issues being taken up by the women's movement and also gives educational sponsorships. It has reached out to 40 women's colleges in Mumbai by extending the use of its library. It has established a wall poster project - Vicharakshari in four colleges. It has provided educational sponsorship to 25 girls as assistance for higher education. On an average it helps 10-15 students per day in its women's studies projects. Its publications and facilities are beneficial academically for reference and research work, to students in their projects on women's studies and to women's movement activists. It calls for contributing to the educational sponsorship program, donation of books and participation in its activities. Akshara would like to network with colleges through various activities, with community youth in organizing films, campaigns and awareness programs. Membership to its library is open to all
