Bedroom Secrets
Deepika Jain

A bedroom is a place to retire in after a day's hard work and toil. It is a place to unwind and be with your self and your dreams. It is haven to seek solace and feel relaxed, rejuvenate and dream. It also serves more than one function of providing comfort and sleep. In many modern homes, bedrooms also serve as studios, playrooms, living rooms or workrooms during the day. It is also a space for hobbies, homework, play space for young ones or simply a refuge for television. The compact design of a house makes every room functional in many aspects.

As bedroom is one's most private space, it is done in consonance with one's personality, preferences, lifestyle, cultural background, aesthetic preferences and needs. Ranging from the colour of the room, furniture, and setting to accessories, everything reflects the personality and taste of the owner. Hence, there are no basic laws or stated guidelines which can be applied to decorate all bedrooms. However, one can always make use of the fundamental concept of designing to create a desired ambience.

The bedroom, no matter small or big is often easier to catch up in a glance. Therefore, uniformity of colour and texture is a must. It gives a homogeneous and neat effect and presents a welcoming atmosphere. The colour scheme chosen could be shades of a single colour or sharp contrast of two or several colours. While a single colour gives the illusion of a big size of the room, contrast divides the room into separate specific portions for different functions. Similarly, a fully carpeted room makes it looks bigger than keeping small rugs. Flooring of a particular kind matching the colour scheme is also an economical, hassle-free and viable option.

On account of changed lifestyle a less rigid system of storage space is being adopted nowadays. This not only offers a broader choice but also saves space and is more economical. The choice of storage ranges from simple assemble-and-paint-it-yourself furniture units to sophisticated modular furniture with dressing tables, lighting, adjustment shelves, drawers and trays. However, one needs to take care if they conveniently hold all shapes and sizes of things and if the finish is smooth and handles are shaped for a good grip. Wardrobes are usually from 1.90 to 2m high and 55cm deep and have interior steps for adjusting the shelves. If the wardrobe has only two doors it is a good idea to put mirrors on the inside to be able to see oneself from behind as well as the front.

The traditional bed position, sticking out into the room with its against a wall, may make for easy bed-making and sheet changing, and provide space on both sides for bedside storage. It is best not to have bed facing the east window- unless blinds are used to avoid glare. Windows can be done in innovative styles, like hanging a rug from it or using a bright-coloured flowers curtains in a room painted in pale colours.

As in other parts of the room, lighting plays a very important part in giving the room a character and creating a dramatic effect. Lighting should be such that it provides good reading light without glare. The lamp must be stable or fixed to the wall. The switch must be easy to reach in dark, with no trailing flexes. Most rooms benefit from a combination of functional and decorative lighting relying on the former to set the scene and the latter to add interest. Basic fixtures like tube lights are needed for activities like reading or watching television but for dramatic effect secondary lighting in the form of shades and shadows, secondary lighting (spotlights, dimmers, uplighters) is extremely important.
