Grapes Grapes come to us from the dark abysm of time. Archaeologists have dug out several specimens of fossilized grape plants from the wombs of the earth. They
are also found entombed with the mummies in Egypt. Egyptian
hieroglyphics record details of grape cultivation and wine- making.
Wine-making was an art in Greece during the time of Homer (700 BC). The
Bible has a reference to the vineyard tended by Noah. Back in India,
Charaka and Sushruta have have extensively referred to grapes in their
early medical treatises (1st Century AD).IGrape juice is also known to battle bacteria and studies made on animals confirm that the tooth decay process could be successfully thwarted by chewing grapes regularly. The fruits possess a very high concentration of caffeic acid, a polyphenol compound known to prevent cancer in animals. An American study confirms that raisin intake could be linked to a low rate of cancer deaths. Grapes, either fresh or dried, are considered to be blood-purifiers. Fresh grapes are cooling, demulcent, diuretic, laxative and stomachic. The leaves are astringent, sometimes used in diarrhoea. The juice of the unripe fruits is used as an astringent in throat affections.
