Banana
Or kela is perhaps one of the most nutritional fruits in the world. The fruit is full of energy value, tissue-building elements, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is prescribed in Ayurveda as a positive treatment for strengthening and regenerating body tissue, gaining weight etc. Banana, in combination with milk, provides all the nutrients that body needs. It is a completely balanced diet.
It also happens to be the most hygienic fruit as it comes in a thick protective covering which provides it a shield against bacteria and contamination. The plant of banana and the fruit as well are considered very sacred in India and used in all religious ceremonies.

The food value of a large banana is equal to approximately 100 calories. It contains:

Calcium 17mg
Phosphorus 36mg
Iron 0.9mg
Vitamin C 7mg


The fruit of banana is 70% moisture and 27% carbohydrates. The medicinal benefits of banana include:
1) Promotion of healthy digestion through retention of calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen --all these act together to build sound and regenerated tissues.
2)Large quantities of assimilable sugar, present in banana, are an aid to youthful growth and metabolism.
3) Ripe bananas greatly relieve acute symptoms of ulcers by neutralizing the over-acidity of the gastric juices, reducing the irritation and accelerating the healing process.
4)The high iron content of banana stimulates the production of haemoglobin in the blood and helps fight anaemia.
5) Bananas are very useful in the treatment of all the disorders of the digestive system including dysentery, diarrhoea and constipation.
6) Perhaps a lesser-known but immensely valuable therapeutic quality of banana is treatment of arthritis and gout. A diet consisting entirely of bananas for three to four days is prescribed in these conditions.
7) Much contrary to the popular belief bananas can also be used as a weight reduction diet for over-weight people as they contain no sodium. An exclusive diet of six bananas and four glasses of skimmed milk per day is prescribed for 10 to 15 days for losing weight.
8) The paste of mashed bananas can be applied over burns and wounds for immediate relief. It can also be used as a face pack for removing spots and blemishes.
9) Cooked bananas or the juice of banana plantin is a wonder cure for people suffering from T.B.
10) A combination of curd and cooked banana flower helps regulate menstrual cycle, relieves painful and excessive bleeding.
11) Kidney disorders can be treated with the help of an exclusive banana diet for 4 to 5 days, as they are high in carbohydrates and low in protein and salt. However, bananas are a total no-no for those who are afflicted with kidney failure because they are rich in potassium.
Banana flour is a rich source of minerals and is considered a perfect diet for infants and sick people on account of being full of essential nutrients and regenerative properties.
