Methods Of Naturopathy

-- INFLUENZA --
Influenza is an acute disease similar to all other fevers. Its cardinal symptoms are: high temperature, aches over the whole of the body, stiffness of the limbs and a sore throat.

Even though the fever in influenza is not very high- rarely going above 103 degree F - its seriousness consists in its aftermath when serious complication in the form of infection of the lungs or the respiratory tract take place. If broncho-pneumonia develops after or during the last stage of influenza the poison may spread to the heart and cause cyanosis leading to death.

Treatment: The treatment of influenza is the same for all fevers with a minor difference, viz., fasting should be undertaken for five to seven days depending upon the elevation of temperature of the body. After the fast, the patient should be kept on an all-fruit diet for a couple of days. Milk and fruits may be allowed thereafter followed by boiled vegetables.

MALARIA

Symptoms: Malaria is a fever common to tropical and sub-tropical regions, particularly, places which are moist and dirty. The causative parasite enters the blood stream through the bite of a mosquito of a particular variety and traditional medicine places too much of reliance on quinine and its derivatives for its treatment.

Before the onset of malaria, the patient has vague pains all over the body, headache and a slight rise of temperature. The onset of fever is preceded by a feeling of chilliness in the hottest of weather and no amount of blankets or quilts gives any relief from the chill. With the rise of temperature, the hot stage begins when the fever may reach 106 degree F or even more. After several hours of high temperature, the sweating begins and the fever comes down leaving the patient extremely weak and emaciated. The fever may come again the next day, two days after or even three days later.

Treatment: The traditional treatment for malaria, as has been mentioned above, is quinine, but a large number of cases develop complications like loss of hearing (which, fortunately, is temporary in most cases), anorexia and a feeling of unease. In some cases the parasite may not be found in the blood and may lodge itself in the spleen or the liver making the case more intractable.

The treatment for malaria is the same as for all other acute fevers. If the temperature goes beyond 105 degree F the body of the patient should be wrapped in a sheet dipped in iced water to bring down the fever. The moment the temperature is lowered to 102 degree F the iced water routine should be abandoned.

No milk should be given to the patient. Loss of appetite is a natural concomitant of malaria, it's nature way of warning the system not to take any so-called nourishment. Water should be given freely and in extreme cases of weakness, fruit juice - preferably that of orange - may be given in medium quantities.
